Nail Your Brand Design

Source the Packaging

Source the Packaging

Designing your packaging is only half the job. The other half is sourcing materials and finishes that bring your design to life—and make sure it feels as good as it looks. Cheap packaging can undo all the work you’ve put into your brand system. Thoughtful sourcing makes your product stand out and builds trust with customers.

Elements to Consider

  • Central Frame (Sticker or Label): Your logo and product info often live on a sticker or label that sits inside the frame. Choose durable, smudge-proof stock that holds up in handling.
  • Patterned Wrapping Paper: If your packaging uses a full pattern, this could be printed wrapping paper, tissue, or box wrap. Make sure it’s repeatable and printed cleanly.
  • Paper Quality: Not all paper is equal. Compare matte vs. glossy finishes, thickness (GSM), and recycled or sustainable options. A flimsy box makes a brand feel cheap; sturdy paperboard or kraft instantly feels premium.
  • Debossing & Embossing: These techniques press your design into the paper (deboss = sunken, emboss = raised). Subtle, tactile details that elevate your brand.
  • Foil & Metallic Print: Gold, silver, or colored foils can make logos, frames, or accents shine. Best used sparingly for luxury or premium feel.
  • Printing Techniques: Offset vs. digital printing can affect color depth, sharpness, and cost. Ask suppliers for samples before committing.
  • Sustainability: Customers notice when you choose recycled paper, soy-based inks, or biodegradable wraps. These choices add authenticity to your brand story.

The key is to treat packaging as part of the product, not an afterthought. Every texture, finish, and detail should reinforce the story you’re telling.

Action

Request physical samples of paper stocks, stickers, and finishes from at least two packaging suppliers. Compare how each feels in your hands. Write down which ones align with your brand ethos (craft, quality, sustainability).
