Price With Purpose
Pricing isn’t just math—it’s strategy. The number you choose tells customers how to perceive your product: is it everyday affordable, premium and aspirational, or somewhere in between? Set it too low and you undermine your craft. Set it too high and you risk scaring away early buyers. The goal is to price with purpose: a balance between profit, positioning, and customer trust.
Three Factors to Balance
- Costs – Cover your product, packaging, shipping, and platform fees. If you don’t know your costs, you can’t price sustainably.
- Market – Look at what similar products sell for on Etsy, Amazon, or in shops. Pricing way below competitors hurts credibility; pricing far above requires a strong story to back it up.
- Perceived Value – Customers pay for more than the product—they pay for design, story, and quality. A beautifully packaged soap can sell for $12 where a plain one sells for $4.
Strategies That Work
- Keystone Pricing – A simple rule of thumb: retail price = 2x your total cost.
- Tiered Offers – Offer small, medium, and premium versions (e.g. single item, bundle, gift set).
- Anchor Pricing – Show a higher-priced option so your main product feels more accessible.
Calculate your total cost per unit (product + packaging + shipping + fees). Write down your competitors’ prices. Then decide: do you want to compete on accessibility, premium craft, or somewhere in between? Set your first price and commit to testing it.
