Find Your Patterns
Patterns are the invisible glue of great design. A subtle, repeatable background pattern can lift packaging, websites, and social media visuals from plain to polished. The most elegant brands use patterns not as decoration, but as a system—something that can be applied consistently across touchpoints to create a recognizable look.
Types of Patterns
Patterns come in many styles, each carrying its own mood and cultural resonance:
- Arabesque / Islamic Geometry – repeating geometric or floral motifs, timeless and highly versatile.
- Rococo – ornate swirls and flourishes, perfect for luxury or heritage vibes.
- Japanese – clean, repeating motifs like seigaiha (waves) or asanoha (hemp leaf), ideal for minimalist craft.
- Chinese – intricate knotwork or cloud motifs, often bold and auspicious.
- Playful / Niche Repeats – quirky icons or illustrations (e.g. coffee beans, soap bubbles, tiny aprons) that bring fun to casual brands.
Whatever style you choose, the key is systematic design. Patterns should repeat seamlessly, scale well, and feel like part of your identity. Done right, they become a quiet signature—something your customers recognize without even seeing your logo.
Browse free pattern libraries (like HeroPatterns, Patterninja, or Vecteezy) or commission a custom one. Save at least two seamless patterns that fit your brand identity, one geometric and one organic, and test them as a background on a mock package or web section.
